About Mario

Message from Mario
Everyone is born with infinite creativity. The key to remaining creative is to remain playful.

"I've always had tons of creativity. As a child I widely explored my creativity by writing poems, drawing characters and graffiti. As I went to high school, I followed an art class, where creativity was limited to the schools ideas. There was little room for free creative exploration. This created an inner conflict for me, because I loved creating, but I didn't want my playfulness to be limited

After high school, I went to university, and obtained my BA (business administration) degree. I then took some time to closely listen to my deepest desires. It was at this moment that I felt the confidence to re-open my chamber of creativity, while not being afraid of being associated with a stigma.

Late 2018, I decided to focus fully on painting, and I started experimenting at full speed. My eagerness to learn and ambitions of creating continuously stimulate me to develop my techniques. During this period, my trademark #MagicOnCanvas came to life. With #MagicOnCanvas I refer to the magical effect of my creation process, and the "Wow" reaction I hope to receive from people.

In August 2019 I organized my first ever exposition. I see this exposition as the kick-off of my career as an artist.

Since then, I've worked with the Melkweg Expo and Hogeschool van Amsterdam in 2020 and 2021. In 2022 I elaborated my collaboration with the Hogeschool van Amsterdam, and organized an exposition at my former university.

Have a look at my upcoming events page to see what's next!

Over the past years I've taken an inter-disciplinary route, combining art with clothing. In 2023, I'm focussing on further discovering which type of art I'd like to include in my works. To do so, I hope to collaborate with different creatives from varying fiels. My work is continuously transforming.

Techniques

"The majority of my artworks are abstract, but you might recognize certain things. Sometimes I name my paintings to (partially) guide or misguide the viewer's interpretation of my painting."

Most of Mario's art can be categorized as Fluid Art, as he uses large quantities of paint, which flow over the canvas while still "fluid".
By mixing the paints with different pouring mediums and substances, he often creates a chemistry-like reaction on the canvas, which he refers to as #MagicOnCanvas.

He gives everyday objects a new function, and uses them to manipulate and guide the paint accross the canvas.

Mario sees every painting as an experiment, and strives to constantly adapt his technique to create the result he desires.

Inspiration

"One of my biggest sources of inspiration is Nature. Think of the Elements, bacteria, chemistry, but also animals, mountains, and the sky. Nature is such an accesible source of inspiration, as it is always around us.

Another big source of inspiration for me is the Galaxy. All the empty space, unknown processes and infinity of the galaxy is what attract me. Space is mysterious and often unexplainable. That to me is Magic.

Moreover, I've found a lot of inspiration in the Japanese culture. Not only am I inspired by Japanese artist Takashi Murakami, but also the Japanese way of life. The Japanese have a certain sophistication which amazes and inspires me.

Besides the Japanese culture, I am inspired by pop-art and pop-culture. In my opinion, Joseph Klibansky is a fantastic Dutch artist who uses pop-culture in his works.

Moreover, I really admire Callen Schaub, who stimulates increasing the accesibility of becoming an artist using his #FakeArt movement. He has created a strong voice against stigma's around art and artists, which I strongly admire."
